Dartmouth, located on the mouth of the River Dart on the south coast of Devon, has been an important
naval port for centuries. The world famous Britainnia Royal Naval College is based in the town. There is much to see
and do in the town and the surrounding area; Dartmouth Castle (English Heritage) is situated at the head of the River Dart.
The Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway runs along the coast daily between the months of June and September.

West Alvington is a small coastal village a mile from the centre of Kingsbridge and towards Salcombe, both towns being renowned for their sailing. This part of Devon is well known for its spectacular, rocky coastline, unspoilt sandy coves and beaches with Thurlestone, Hope Cove, Bantham Beach and Salcombe being an easy drive from the cottage. There are also some marvellous walks along the coast path, with long stretches of land being owned and maintained by The National Trust.
