Devon is a county of many contrasts with much to enchant its visitors. Its dramatic coastline, north and south, offers miles of open sandy beaches - good for swimming and surfing - sheltered coves and inlets, popular seaside resorts such as Exmouth, Torquay and Brixham and the beautiful Dart valley and estuary, which reaches the sea at Dartmouth.
Inland is Dartmoor, 365 square miles of wild scenery with breathtaking vistas, shaped rock tors and steep, wooded valleys around its edge.
Devon's principal towns are Exeter, its capital, encompassing 2,000 years of history with its ancient cathedral and old city walls, and the historic port of Plymouth, at the mouth of the Tamar, where Brunel's impressive railway bridge and the more recent road bridge span the estuary into Cornwall.
