Great Torrington

An ancient hilltop town on the River Torridge, Great Torrington is inland from Bideford and close to the north Devon coast. The town is famous for its association with the Civil War. Nearby are the Tarka Trail, RHS Rosemoor Gardens and the Taw Valley.

Dating back some 300 years, Pack Horse Cottage is very much part of local history. In the days of highwaymen and Lorna Doone, travellers would pass the cottage to cross the old Pack Horse Bridge. They would place their toll money in a bag suspended over the gun which was pointing at them through a hole in the wall of the porch. Both the old stone bridge and the hole in the porch are still in evidence today. This delightful and unusual property has been converted from a former threshing barn (approx. 300 years old) and forms one end of the yard of Middle Burrow Farm, ¾ mile from the attractive village of Wootton Courtenay.
