Corfe Castle

A most picturesque village clustered below its great fortress. Its grey Purbeck stone cottages date back to the early 17th Century. Their beams sag under the weight of the stone tiles giving a delightful variety of roof shapes.

Guarding the gap in the Purbeck Hills, this great fortress has stood on its mound since Norman times. It survived intact during the Medieval period but was beseiged and blown up during the Civil War in the 17th Century. It is perhaps the most impressively situated of British castles. Its ruins stand stark against the sky above and the old grey stone village in the valley. The decaying walls and towers retain many memories of strife, treachery and romance through the centuries.
