Milton Abbas

Milton Abbas's long street of thatched cottages is an early example of a planned village. The first Earl of Dorchester removed the original village leaving just one beautiful 15th Century cottage. The "new" village was built in the 1770's to a plan by Capability Brown and has changed little since those days. The Abbey church is a superb building of lofty proportions though its interior appears rather cold, probably attributable to Wyatt's destructive 'restoration'. Even so, its architectural qualities and the beauty of its setting amongst trees and lawns make it a place of great attraction.
