This quiet, unspoilt town is positioned at the heart of the Blackmore Vale. Its two parts are attractively set on either side of the River Stour and linked by a fine medieval bridge. The town has connections with two of Dorset's most famous writers; Thomas Hardy lived here for a while, and it was the birthplace of William Barnes, the poet.
