Tolpuddle

A quiet village of thatched cottages beside the River Piddle with a Norman Church containing some very interesting relics. This is hardly the description of a place which has changed the course of British history, but, even so, here lie the origins of the Trade Union Movement, with the Tolpuddle Martyrs of 1834. These six Dorset men formed together in an attempt to obtain an increase in their wages from 9 to 10 shillings. They were found guilty and sentenced to 7 years deportation in Australia. The village contains several memorials to the men, including six cottages built in 1934 by the TUC.
