Lying on the banks of the River Stour, the atmosphere of this old town is suggested by the narrow bridges which take travellers over the nearby rivers as they approach. The town takes its name from the Minster, built on the site of an 8th Century monastery, the burial place of King Alfred's brother, Ethelred. This was was replaced in the 11th Century by the Norman church which contributes a considerable part to the fine building we see today.
