Bath

The Romans came to Bath for the hot springs which force their way to the surface from far below the Mendip Hills. They built a walled town and around these healing waters they created a complex of baths and a temple, calling the place Aquae Sulis. The town was almost totally destroyed in the 6th Century by the Saxons. As a result, the baths were not rediscovered until the 19th Century. Attractions in and around Bath include The Roman Baths Museum, The Jane Austen Centre, The Royal Crescent and the Museum of Costume.
