Wilton, the ancient capital of Wessex, is a small town just to the west of Salisbury. The name derives from the Saxon tribe who once occupied this area and from which the county acquired its name. Wilton House, the 450 year old home of the Earl of Pembroke contains many state rooms and is open to the public from April to October. The town is famous for its carpet making; the Wilton Carpet Factory in the Wilton Shopping Village has an exhibition which charts the history of the industry.
